Faces of FACCES October 2023: Aseylean Brown

We would like to highlight Ms. Aseylean Brown for the October 2023 Faces of FACCES! Ms. Brown has been participating in the FACCES Urban Garden greenhouse all through the summer with her great grandson and her dog by her side!

“I was born and raised on a farm. We grew our food. I didn’t think I’d use those skills again until I got here.” Ms. Brown shares.

Starting from scratch, Ms. Brown has played a huge part in planting for the summer and harvesting the produce as well. The produce ranges from Cucumbers, Zucchini, Tomatoes, Beans and more! The FACCES Urban Garden tilapia have grown too as we look to begin harvesting them soon.

She now has begun preparing for the Fall harvest, planting seeds both in the greenhouse and outside in the outdoor garden beds.

“You know you don’t have to buy all your food; you can grow it too.”

We appreciate and commend Ms. Brown for her contribution, and the joy she has for the community!

FACCES Kitchen & Theater

July 24, 2023, marked the beginning of the FACCES Kitchen & Theater project! The FACCES Kitchen Construction event was hosted to open the doors for the community to witness firsthand the progress taking place in their community! People of all ages, from teenagers to seniors, contributed to the initial phase of the project by participating in the demolition process, symbolizing the transition from old to new.

The FACCES Kitchen &Theatres’ purpose is to inspire healthy eating habits, conversations, and healthy lifestyles for families. This haven will support the community in taking one step closer to leading healthier lives.

Because of you, FACCES Fresh Market is adapting to meet the needs of our community thanks to your valuable feedback. FACCES Fresh Market is a year around service, rain, sleet, or snow does not stop our distribution of fresh food and resources.  We need your continued support because this community service would not be possible without volunteers, donations, and in-kind support.

If you or an organization you know has resources and/or shelf stable items that can be distributed at FACCES Fresh Market, please email our new Food Director, Kori Johnson, at Food@thefacces.org

Urban Garden expansion to the outdoors!

It’s Spring – and you’re invited to FACCES Urban Garden!

The 2022 – 2023 FACCES growing season was an overwhelming success! Families were inspired to take what they learned from the gardening classes and start their own gardens at home.

That success inspired us to expand the greenhouse and begin construction on the new outdoor garden beds. This now gives us the opportunity to grow and harvest more food together. Community members can attend the FACCES Farm Stand events and take the delicious fresh produce to their families – at no cost.

All are invited to tour and to join the next FACCES Urban Gardener’s Gathering!

Strawberry Tabbouleh Salad

Ingredients:

*optional additions: feta, goat cheese crumbles, toasted pistachios , toasted almonds, avocado

Instructions:

  1. Rinse quinoa well, then drain. In a medium pot add 1 ½ Cups water and quinoa. Bring to a boil. Cover, and turn heat down to low , and cook for 15 minutes. Turn heat off, leave covered 5 more minutes. Fluff and chill quinoa. ( You could do this a head and refrigerate overnight)
  2. Add cooked, chilled quinoa to a large bowl. Finely dice strawberries and add to the bowl. Finely dice the cucumber and red onion and add to the bowl. Chop mint and parsley. Gently Toss.
  3. Pour in olive oilred wine vinegar, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and mix. Let salad stand for a few minutes to allow the salt and acid to absorb. Mix again. Taste and adjust salt and lemon, adding more if necessary. The quinoa will soak up some salt, so check again right before serving. Serve on a large platter, scattered with fresh herbs, or over greens.
  4. Optional for more flavor and texture-add feta or goat cheese crumbles, avocado, or toasted pistachios or slivered almonds.

Baba ghanoush w/ vegetables & baked pita

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the eggplant from sticking to the pan. Halve the eggplants lengthwise and brush the cut sides lightly with olive oil. Place them in the prepared pan with the halved sides down.
  2. Roast the eggplant until the interior is very tender throughout and the skin is collapsing, about 35 to 40 minutes (may be longer if you are using 1 large eggplant). Set the eggplant aside to cool for a few minutes. Flip the eggplants over and scoop out the flesh with a large spoon, leaving the skin behind.
  3. Place a mesh strainer over a mixing bowl, then transfer the flesh to the strainer and discard the skins. Pick out any stray bits of eggplant skin and discard. You want to remove as much moisture from the eggplant here as possible, so let the eggplant rest for a few minutes and shake/stir the eggplant to release some more moisture.
  4. Discard all of the eggplant drippings, drain and wipe out the bowl, and dump the eggplant into the bowl. Add the garlic and lemon juice to the eggplant and stir vigorously with a fork or whisk until eggplant breaks down. Add the tahini to the bowl and stir until it’s incorporated. While stirring, slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Continue stirring until the mixture is pale and creamy, and use your fork to break up any particularly long strings of eggplant.
  5. Stir in the parsley, salt and cumin. Season to taste with more salt and more lemon juice, if you’d like a more tart flavor.
  6. Transfer the baba ghanoush to a serving bowl and lightly drizzle olive oil on top. Lastly, sprinkle parsley and smoked paprika on top. Serve with accompaniments of your choice.

FACCES Urban Garden Expansion Spring 2023

This year, FACCES plans to expand its Urban Garden program outside the greenhouse. With the support of Marc Amante of Central State University, we plan to build new garden beds outside of the FACCES Urban Garden Greenhouse. These garden beds will give FACCES families an opportunity to adopt a bed of their own, and allow them to grow their own food for a full growing season.

Register here for the Urban Gardener’s Gathering on February 16th, 2023.
